December PMR Newsletter

As the festive season approaches we would like to take a moment to reflect on our journey to date, and to thank our Members for joining us on this adventure.  Your ongoing support of the Prime Ministers’ Row initiative has made all the difference; what started as the spark of an idea around a kitchen table is evolving into a ground-breaking project that will forever change the landscape of the National Capital Region.

At the outset, the idea behind Prime Minister’s Row was met with critical community buy-in, cross-country enthusiasm and a flurry of media interest.  It was clear that Canadians from Coast to Coast to Coast were fascinated by the opportunity to preserve and protect Laurier Avenue East and its environs as a cultural landscape of national importance and to transform it into Canada’s first Street Museum – an interactive, inclusive, intergenerational pedestrian-focused zone that commemorates the lives and legacies of all former Canadian Prime Ministers and celebrates Canadian leadership in governance and democracy.

Since then, we’ve been hard at work making it happen.

While it might have seemed a little quiet on the PMR front in recent months, a look behind the scenes tells a very different story.  From regular Committee and Working Group meetings to Board check-ins to partner outreach sessions to brainstorming workshops to planning exercises to project charrettes, our incredible team (Board of Directors, Special Advisors, Steering Committee and Community Working Groups) has been working tirelessly to lay the foundations for long-term, sustainable success. To date, we have created design plans, established governance frameworks, undertaken historical research, developed a programming and events calendar and – perhaps, most importantly – forged alliances with a myriad of private and public-sector partners.

In particular, the support of the following individuals and organizations has and continues to be critical to our success: Action Sandy Hill; allsaints Event Space; Dr. Christophe Rivet & Cultural Spaces Consulting; Council of Heritage Organizations of Ottawa; Firas Nasser Professional Corporation; Friends of Laurier House National Historic Site; Gowling WLG; GSM Project; Heritage Ottawa Development Inc.; Jonathan Herman Graphic Design; Ms. Natalie Stern; National Trust for Canada; Price Waterhouse Coopers, Red Fish Graphics; St. Joseph’s Church; Tim Plumtre & Associates Inc; and Urban Strategies Inc.

Our thanks go also to the elected representatives at all three levels of government, who have committed their support to Prime Ministers’ Row and whose assistance is instrumental in moving our project forward.

And once again, a sincere thank you to you, our Members for your continued support and enthusiasm for this very important project.

2018 promises to be an exciting year for Prime Ministers’ Row with many of our efforts coming to fruition.  You’ll learn about our exciting partnership with Montreal-based GSM Project – a global powerhouse in the cultural service and visitor experience industry; you’ll have an opportunity to provide feedback into our design plans for the Street Museum; you’ll continue to receive discounts for select activities, like last month’s Sir John A. Macdonald – The Musical at Centrepointe Theatre; you’ll be invited to participate in our opening season of programming, which recently included the pre-show talk for Sir John A.: Acts of a Gentrified Ojibway Rebellion at the National Arts Centre; you’ll be able to browse our vibrant new website; and you’ll be welcomed at several exceptional events, like the Spring Swing we co-hosted at Laurier House National Historic Site this past June.

We have come a long way but we still have far to go.

Please consider a gift of Membership to Prime Ministers’ Row as a fabulous stocking stuffer this season, or a donation – large or small – to our work. And don’t forget to mark your calendars for our next signature event: a private whiskey tasting at allsaints Event Space, formerly Sir Robert Borden’s church, on Friday, February 23, 2018.  For $135.00/ticket treat yourself or a loved one to a night of delicious food, live music, guided discussion and five samplers of single-malt Scotch.  Buy two tickets before December 25, 2017 and you’ll receive a complimentary Prime Ministers’ Row membership.  Click here for tickets – the gift of good cheer is priceless….

From our PMR family to yours – Happy Holidays!!
